We are the Thornton family.

We are Paul Thornton and Rachel Thornton Verhaalen, wholesale coffee roasters in Beaverton, Oregon. We are also a family—a tribe, even—born and raised in and around Portland. We grew up working in the specialty coffee industry. We have formed this family business in order to share our knowledge and passion for coffee with our customers.

We’d be thrilled if you’d join us.

Thornton Family Coffee Roasters was founded by Paul Thornton, who started his coffee career in 1982 working for Coffee Bean International as their Roastmaster. Paul is a Specialty Coffee Association Former President, a Roasters Guild founder and longtime member, and a recognized coffee Roastmaster and green coffee buyer.

Paul has partnered with his daughter Rachel - an expert Barista, trained extensively in coffee retail and operations. Rachel has followed in the footsteps of her father, beginning her career in coffee in 2003 at CBI. Rachel also lived in Kailua Kona, Hawaii, from 2012 to 2016 producing coffee and managing operations for a large Kona coffee company.

We use our skill and knowledge of coffee to purchase, roast, and deliver sustainable coffee to retail shops and consumers in the area.

Our deep roots in the Portland coffee scene have helped us understand the local industry and how it compares to the rest of the Northwest. Our focus is to supply coffee of unparalleled quality and educate our wholesale and retail customers who wish to be a part of our efforts to offer an up-scaled coffee experience.

We purchase green coffee through certifications, direct trade, and transparent supply chains—some of which we have been working with for years—and ship it to our roasting facility in Beaverton.

Grounded in our rich coffee history, we are continually expanding our passion within the coffee world and are excited to offer clean, fresh, solid tasting coffees. We work hard and have fun doing what we love to do most—roast coffee!
